| Born
on the 16th December 1947 in San Gallo. A very skilled
gentleman-driver, even though he could never finish off
a whole championship.
Starting to race in 1973, driving a Fiat 128 in the
"Italian Touring Car Championship" for three
years.
He also took part twice in the "Giro d'Italia automobilistico"
(the car tour of Italy); year '75 (driving an Alfa Romeo)
and '77 (driving a Ford Escort).
In '76 and '77 he competed in a few European Sport
Prototypes races, driving a Lola-BMW, and even participated
in some races of the World Silhouette Championship (2nd
overall in the 24 Hours of Daytona, 2nd at Mugello and
1st at Paul Ricard, driving a Porsche 935).
The year 1978 marked his short but significant appearance
in the European F2 Championship, driving a March, he
achieved a very good 6th place on his debut in Thruxton
and retired in Hockenheim.
Moreover he took part in some European Touring Car races
with an Alfa Romeo "Alfetta" GTV 6. Later
('85-'86-'87), he drove cars of the same manufacturer,
while in '88 he sat into a Ford Sierra Cosworth.
Romeo Camathias belongs to the small Swiss drivers
group (together with Surer and Regazzoni) that got the
Formula 1 Super licence.
